Derek returns to Newcastle in 2009, following a successful season with the Diamonds in 2002.
He was delighted to be allowed by his parent club Edinburgh to return to Newcastle in 2010 to make it two on the trot having enjoyed a very successful season in the Black and White back in 2002, since when he had skippered the Edinburgh Monarchs to the 2008 Premier league title.
Speedway, he would agree, turned his life around and he made his debut 10 seasons ago in 1999 for the Linlithgow lightening in the 3rd Division before moving on to the Ashfield Giants Conference side in 2000.
In 2001 both Edinburgh and Glasgow enjoyed his racing before his superb year on Tyneside 12 months later, but ever since it’s been the Monarchs or the Dale Devils who have had him on board, last year lifting the league title as skipper of the Monarchs.
He’s got to be one of the biggest characters in modern speedway and will always lift the spirits in whatever club he races for, but now he’s back with the Diamonds once, who knows where his 2010 will end up.
Congratulations to Derek and partner Lee who presented the world with a wonderful little girl through the winter named Sophie, and as many a facebook scribe has said long before me… thankfully she’s got her mum’s looks ;-)
