Newcastle Speedway is very sad to announce the death of former Diamond, Neil 'Fish' Coddington.
Neil, 57, was a champion powerboat racer and was killed while out on a training run where he was believed to be warming up the Championship winning hydroplane, Blue Max, that had seen him and his brother Graham take countless major trophies.
He had been competing in powerboat events for over 30 years.
The accident happened at Somerset Dam, QLD, northwest of Brisbane when the high powered racing craft rolled over.
Neil was thrown from the boat and despite wearing a crash helmet and being attended to by nearby boats, tragically did not did not survive the crash.
The news came through from Australia early on Friday morning when John Abel, who used to be a Newcastle team mechanic during the time that Neil rode for the Diamonds, telephoned George English with the sad details which are currently featuring heavily on Australia's national TV news channels.
Everyone at Newcastle Speedway sends their sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Neil, who although never reaching the heights of Speedway stardom was a hugely popular member of the Newcastle Diamonds team. |
